DESIGNING THE GARDEN OF GRACE & THE JOHN NEVINS ANDREWS SCULPTURE BASE
at
PIONEER MEMORIAL CHURCH
By Dr. Stanley M. Bell—Architect, P.L.L.C.
The sculpture base, entrance plaza, landscape planters, and site lighting design was created at that special place on campus where the academic meets the spiritual. John Andrews is shown leading the way and indeed he was the pioneer in missionary work to Africa for the Seventh-day Adventist church.
Dr. Bell brought together the architectural aesthetic, construction materials and goals for the setting of the sculpture that truly accomplished the intentions of the sculpture. His design allowed the sculpture to represent the center point of the church mission—on bended knees, reaching out to serve others and spread the message with confidence in the Promise of salvation … where Christ says: I Will Come Again.
The design concept for the Garden of Grace was written by the Architect before the garden was designed and is presented on the following two pages.
